In this second iteration of faith, hope, and love to the Thessalonians, Paul regarded faith and love as our breastplate. A breastplate defends the heart, the source of faith and love. Hope is a helmet, armor which protects the head. Hope of salvation is the intellectual core of our redemption-God's promise of what we will be.What does the Bible say about faith, hope, and love? 1 Corinthians 13:13 (NIV) says, "And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love." In context Paul lists faith, hope, and love as three primary gifts all Christians will always have. 1 Corinthians 12 to 14 are three chapters focusing mainly on spiritual gifts. Faith, hope, and love are called theological—or basic—virtues because so many other virtues depend on them. The Catechism of the Catholic Church explains that "the theological virtues … are infused by God into the souls of the faithful to make them capable of acting as his children and of meriting eternal life.

In Scripture we learn that God is love ( 1 John 4:8) and that he sent his Son, Jesus Christ, to die for us — a supreme act of sacrificial love. Love is what motivated God the Father to send His only Son to die for us. Thus, love is the virtue upon which all Christian faith and hope now stand.
